Great Egret

We recently took a trip to Indian Shores, Florida. It's on the Gulf side of Florida. The image above as well as the Blue Heron in the previous post were both made on the beach. It's home to lots of shore birds throughout the year. I am processing images from the trip and will post more images and information on the trip in future posts.

Hi Mike, this is a beautiful shot with some nice tones. I like the 'posture' of the heron here. I'm not quite sure what's going in the image, is it sea spray that blurs a bit or is it post-processing that plays tricks with my eyes. It's a mysterious look and I like it.

Thomas,

Thanks. The blurring in the background was a result of several things. First, I used an 80-200mm @f/2.8 that gave a nice "bokeh" effect. Secondly, in processing of the image I experimented with a tilt-shift lens look using Gaussian blur. I didn't particularly like the way it looked so I began taking away the blur with a layer mask until I liked what I saw. I then added the Nik Software Glamour Glow filter to taste. I also used the ND filter from Nik. Lastly, I added two separeate curve adjustments. As I go back through the PSD file and turn off each layer, I don't see any one particular adjustment that brought about this look more than another. Maybe the linear contrast curve punches it a bit but they all bring the image together as a whole.

Most likely not to you, but to other readers this may seem like a time-consuming or complicated process. It's not really. It's intuitive and with practice it becomes second nature. But, it all begins with a vision, yes?
